It is super frustrating that they hold out on being able to continue playing music while the screen is locked, etc. so that they can monetize it like this.

I was trying to think as why they did this. At first I thought it may have been licensing related, but I'm guessing that's not the case. I primarily think is that you will be able to bypass visual aspect of ads if your screen is locked. It could also just be that they want to "create value" with the subscription.
If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense.
