If things are catching fire "all the time", they need full-time firefighters. Get that frequency down to "once in a while" and an on-call role becomes reasonable, IMO.

Maybe his friend keeps leaving Bunsen burners on?
He's probably the responsible Engineer who knows how the plant/line works they wouldn't be the one manning the hoses.
