Ask HN: What do you look for in a great portfolio?

I'm putting together a software portfolio to apply for jobs in 2018. But most of them are either incomplete, closed source or not complex enough (student work).

Been thinking about building new projects for myself, however I have no clue what employers are looking for in a new grad portfolio.
