One of the main reasons why I am not upgrading my iPhone 7 Plus this year is that iOS 12 has made it amazingly smooth. I have an iPhone 5S and even that's fantastically smooth with iOS 12. This is not my experience alone btw. So I think you are just making stuff up here.
