They implemented their VM even in Assembler and microcode in the seventies, so C/C++ was a step forward.

He neither had Smalltalk-76/80, Simula 67, Java, Python or Ruby in mind. What he understood by OO is rather "object based" in todays language.
iirc After the laughter, Alan Kay continues and says he didn't have Smalltalk in mind either.
Great, because Stroustrup didn't have Smaltalk in mind when he invented C++ :).
