I think not manager but peers. They are mostly over achievers and somewhat competitive.

Is that because leadership rewards such behavior? I wonder if pressure would be the same If working 12hr days is discouraged and emphasis placed on collaboration and team delivery.
Leadership sets the tone and culture so it's always leadership's fault if culture is toxic.
