For background, Marks has been an ambassador for less than a year and made her fortune selling handbags (some for 40K). She is also an old friend of Trump.

This story also has a lot of detail, and the story appeared in the CIA’s WIRe, a publication widely available to the most senior government officials.

It seems like the kind of thing that would tend to help the President get reelected. Americans often get behind a President when they feel attacked, especially if he responds with "strength". Even otherwise liberal elements may support forceful responses to an attack.

This is of course a very unusual political situation and it's hard to make predictions, but whatever harm it might do to the President personally, it seems likely to benefit him politically.
