Thanks to the mods and to all the members of HN for one of the bright spots of 2020.

So many submissions, so many comments. Most of all, so many intelligent discussions.

Also, so much guidance in how to live life - with curiosity, empathy and optimism.

Times, both bad and good, will come and go. Lives will be lived and time will move on. But seeing the humanism of people, in my humble opinion, is reason for hope for a better future.

A round of applause for 'dang for keeping this place in order. And another for all of you here, contributing things that gratify intellectual curiosity and maintaining a level of discourse that's atypically high for Internet communities.

For me, HN was an important part of keeping sane in this disaster of a year. Let's hope the next one will be boring.

Blwyddyn newydd dda HN, 2020 required an awful lot of "well let's see what the hn comments say about -this-" in response to oh so many fear mongering headlines and half stories. Glad to be here, thanks to dang and the community for keeping it what it is.

Unless there’s another site also called HN, this has been an year of echo chambers, every side on every divisive topic trying to downvote all opposing opinions into gray obscurity.

It's about five to midnight (GMT) Me and the wiff have just done a short wander through the park and around town. The thermometer has dived south quite a lot for these parts and we like to make sure no-one has been left behind.

It looks like the Police and the various charities etc have got everyone safe off the streets here. Those that want to be discovered. We know of several who are quite stubborn about things and they are all fine, so all good.

Man, fuck 2020. I picked up 2 bottles of Champagne for the wife and I before I decided it was a 3 bottle kind of year. It's 5:30 and we're one bottle in so clearly the right decision. Here's to 2021 being a lot better for everyone!
I started reading hackernews in Nov 2019 and get a daily mail with the top 30 posts of the past 24 hours.

I've never missed a day during this time and have learned invaluable things from all of you specially the ones posting thoughtful comments. I'm a believer of "Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformation" and all of you contributed to me getting a little better one day at a time. I'm pushing myself to write and comment more, so I can hopefully be able to return the favor with the things I know best.

Yes, thank you, everyone. Feeling a bit shell shocked, it was a tough year and then just tonight heard my parents were exposed despite many precautions. But through it all this place has been a delight and a resource as always. Whatever the tradeoffs, I'm deeply grateful to live in a time when such groups of people spanning experiences and the globe can come together. Thanks to the mods and everyone who puts their contributions, time and thoughts into HN and the amazing projects that come up here.
Let's just all hope that the Mayan calendar guy didn't misspell 2012.

Feliz año nuevo! I still remember joining hacker news to comment on something back in 2008 and lurking from 2006. It's impossible to enumerate everything I have learned form this community. All I can say is Thank you and let's have a great 2021!
Many thanks to the community that continue making the world a better place, no matter if it's a tutorial, the next billion dollar company or the next great open source project, this is by far the best place for us technologists to learn and make us feel humble about our work everyday. For me HN is an excellent source of curated news, and not always technical. Half of the time my GF asks me "where did you read that?", the answer is HN :)

In addition, thanks to making it to the HN front page, some of my writings are coming out as an actual, real book in April, so I have all of you to thank for this! [ not posting a link or a name because this is a Happy New Year message, not an ad :P ]

2020 had its downs and it's ups for me, but I'm glad I belong to this community. I feel like it's the only sane place on the internet these days. Thank you dang and scotb for keeping it that way :)

Never thought I'd live in a year that will be in the history books for a long time to come. So many lessons learned (most of them hard ones), spending three weeks in bed and many months in recovery was no fun at all. But much better than the alternative.

Now, something tells me that 2021 can't possibly be worse than 2020 was but I've learned to allow for a little bit of superstition here on account of previous sentiments like that. So let me just say that I hope that all of you will make it through the COVID crisis in one piece and healthy and that 2021 will bring you much good luck and good fortune.
