I was one of the naysayers, but I can't recall whether I thought a lack of interest or vandalism would kill it. I also recall feeling similar about OSM after having watched the founder(I think) give a talk about riding around on his bike(~2005).

Nowadays, I no longer own a paper encyclopedia or buy new paper maps. What absolutely indispensable one-hundred percent essential items will be largely gone alongside the 30 year anniversary?
