Seeing the stories with comments comparing the RFC-3339 and ISO-8601, this feels like a good time to point to Markus Kuhn's excellent summary of the standard. It is a great introduction for people who are only familiar with the YYYY-MM-DD aspect of it.

I'd be interested to see similar summaries for the other sections of the standard, such as the IMO excellent durations notation.
