Not quite this old, but I enjoy reading (and trying to visit the sights that remain) the 1930s/1940s guidebooks published by the Federal Writer's Project (FWP) a US agency during the New Deal that provided employment to unemployed authors and journalists. As they were uncopyrighted works of the US government, they are available in various physical and electronic formats today.
