The San Francisco I know (and miss) began the day Weldon Kees's car was found next to the Golden Gate Bridge (July 18, 1955) and ended when Lawrence Ferlinghetti died (February 22, 2021). You can quibble with the dates, but everything that made San Francisco prominent in the modern era is bookended by those events.
