This reads much like similar articles from the 80's (and probably others before that).

There is still very significant leap from the "very close to" state AI is at today, to being equivalent with humans; never mind racing past them.

Indeed - read "The Dream Machine" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/722412.The_Dream_Machine It provided me some shocking perspective on how long the "promise of AI" has been bandied about with language that will be very familiar to the tone of this article.
