You can find a cousin of the striated caracara in the United States, particularly in south Florida and Texas. It is called the northern crested caracara, they mention it later in the article. They look a lot more impressive than the striated variety. If you live in Texas or Florida, try to find one, they are pretty neat.
Go, Jonathan! To think of where he is from his Okkervil River days! This is a lovely book. I'm not a birder myself, but it was nice to read about the caracara and a massive spider.
