I don't understand why this needs to take the entire site down? This makes no no sense to me.
I wasn't reminded of this and now I cannot push any changes to my repository.

What I found interesting is that Gitlab also replaces the repository UI with a generic 503 page that links to the status page.
An improvement would be to have a static/cached version (at least of the repository main page + readme). OTOH I guess these maintenance windows are perhaps infrequent enough (or planned to not exist going forward).
