I've heard people suggest that the UK leaving the EU may actually benefit the use of English as a lingua franca in the EU, because now it doesn't give any EU country an unfair advantage, so countries may be more willing to embrace it. There is also the fact that European countries have invested in English education for the last two decades making it a widely useful language in the EU. Also, though US hegemony may be fading, decades of it have made English extremely useful internationally as well.
