I really thought John Cheever was a fictional character of the Seinfeld TV show. I feel really stupid right now

I look at the backyards-as-a-highway scene of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" as an homage to this story, even though Ferris doesn't use the swimming pools.
Never heard of this author at all, and I was a big fan of mid century American writing in my teens, but not someone I was aware of in the UK. Just reserved a few of his books in my local library, they sound great!
I'm not really a fan of the mid century American literary genre but I did read a couple of his books and found them more appealing than most of his contemporaries, that said they didn't really stick with me either.

Only Vonnegut and Heller (for Catch-22) in that generation really stuck with me after reading though.

I’ve been reading his journals for years. They are incredible. I’ve never read a single story of his, but keep coming back to the journals.
I love Hunter S Thompson'a letters which often take the form of a journal. Brilliant read.
He is famous for his short stories. Most authors that are known all over the world are known for their novels that are easier to sell.
I guess I fell more into scifi for my short stories. I find I read so little these days, looking forward to trying his books.
