I wonder, if one were to suspend something like 40feet shipping containers, like a mine, but inert — would sonar pick it up before a collision?
A Seawolf has the most advanced sonar in existence, a $100M device that is 24 feet in diameter.

But to see something with sound, something has to emit sound. And a sub emitting is an exploit for any enemy.

Now, there are probably low probabilty of intercept wide spectrum techniques (like radar) and maybe short range optical lasers but a Seawolf is a rare bird even among subs. Whatever it is doing it wants to be as quiet as possible (the predecesors of Seawolfs would sail into Soviet territorial waters to tap their underwater cables).
