Is there a particular reason this announcement was made today? Just seems like such an unusual announcement. Didn't realize I needed the 5 UNSC countries to calm my anxieties about nuclear apocalypse today.

NPT's conference take place every 5 years, and it's supposed to take place in New York April 2020, but will have to be postponed again this year due to COVID. I guess they making this announcement to avoid possible worries of the world.
Possibly because Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine in the near future unless immense concessions by NATO are made.
