At first I started reading this and my first thought was "what's the point". As I read it though, I realized these people actually had a tangible impact on the world, they all rallied together and got something done. They can look back at this as they are older and feel like they made the world a tiny bit better during their lives. I write software and really have almost no lasting impact. Went from feeling pretty superior to appreciative in one short article. Interesting how that happened.
... species. One tiny Mexican fish species.
Maybe someone will do that for Homo Sapiens Sapiens Sapiens someday.
One year I was given a simple home aquarium to keep alive and healthy. I tried using reason, even bought a plecostomus to fight (eat) the algae. It was a struggle. I couldn't keep this simple little ecosystem healthy. If only I knew more.
Thought about the great outdoors (we know so little about) - that 4 billion-year experiment. Humbling. So many life-forms to sustain, so much that has to be balanced. Despite our abuse, we take it for granted. That good fortune may not persist.
Many people quit the hobby after starting with too small aquariums that are unstable by design, yep.
