I consult for a company that is an ethical version of Singer.
This article has all the usual hadwavings about what is wrong with ivy admissions and the ability of the affluent to come out looking good.
I'll agree that at some abstract level it's not fair that the affluent can pay for proofing and coaching but I'll note that this critique like all of them offers no alternative.
Pick any metric and the rich will be able to optimize for it.
The only fair alternative would be a lottery.
Is anyone suggesting that world wide, applicants to American universities should be assigned to institutions by lottery?
If Harvard is forced to admit lottery "winners" should students be forced to attend whatever college they get assigned even if it is a community college 3k miles away?
