The press release doesn't say much of substance, but plenty can be found on Brian Kreb's site:
- https://krebsonsecurity.com/tag/revil/
In particular, for the individual named: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/11/revil-ransom-arrest-6m-s...
That is an interesting side-effect of a war - civilians (including hackers) flee into EU, and get arrested/extradited.
I guess there is a silver lining anywhere, if you look hard enough.
He was apparently arrested last November, so before the war. And living in Poland. Not very clever.
interesting whether he has something, in particular about Russian cyberspace, to make a deal.
You'd think he might have more value as a turned cyber asset than indicted? Perhaps a DoJ stake in the ground to encourage others to recant when they find themselves in EU territory avoiding Russian cruise missiles ?
It depends? One should wonder why no effort was made to suggest he return further east, perhaps to Russia. It is possibly an oversight. But there were other individuals who I think were turned over to Western authorities.
From my time with game modding and cheat development communities, there's some subset that is hyperfocused on money and develops a lack of morals. Some of them eventually get into CC fraud, malware, and other cybercrime for profit. A lot of them never get arrested. At best they're just insufferable assholes, but generally they're not the type of person that is a reliable worker. Basically the same reason you don't want to press a prisoner into military service.
Where do you think the FBI gets its employees?
No way. You don’t let the kitten killers play with other cats.
Haha, worked on their compromises. Can't they they're "APT" but far from noobs. Classic committed criminals.
Hopefully there can be some sort of plea deal to handle Russia.
This guy is dangerous, and glad he is off the street. Detonating ransomware via software update distribution network is probably one of the most destructive acts a person could do. Spray and pray with nukes. It’s an extreme sociopathy. Super serial killer mindset.
This guy is at about #20 in this group. The other also. Not even close to the top.
Right. And I hope those others are found. Ransomware is bad for everyone. However, I would say the authors are just weapon dealers. It takes a true monster to take a weapon and indiscriminately fire it at thousands of innocent victims.
I would compare this guy to a VW sales guy. And now they are hyping the arrest of this sales guy, without any background info. Whilst the bosses are enjoying their life in the Ural. and yes, their names are known.
