Personally, a better framed question which works for me is - “What options did you consider and how did you choose this option?”

Agreed, there are lots of ways to explore the problem space.
The OP framing can be helpful when the manager has context on solution X and its pros and cons so it’s helpful for the team to explain through a shared understanding.
