Charles Darwin read Jones' work on the relationship of Sanskrit to Western languages and Jones' hypothesis that the similarities were due to a common ancestor (although lost) of these languages was helpful to him in making the same sort of hypothesis of similarities of current animals being explained by extinct common ancestors.
Sir William Jones was the son of Welsh mathematician Williams Jones, who was notable for introducing the use of the symbol π.
