Interesting, I had no idea that KDE predates GNOME by more than two years. I would have assumed that GNOME release years before KDE.
It's not important who came first, I'm just expressing my surprise.

Gnome was created in part as a response to kde using the Qt toolkit which at the time had some licensing issues. This is why gnome was based on the gtk toolkit which was free as in speech.
