Unfortunately, if you read about real spies, they're quite often abandoned or sacrificed by their own side. Everyone in the business lies, just to keep in practice. This applies to both sides.

Sometimes a compromised agent is "exfiltrated" when he's discovered. Those are the lucky ones.
