Tough choice. If he had cooperated with prosecuters, his sentence would have been reduced but he would have a target on his back.

It's hard for me to think of any form of cybercrime that isn't obviously bad, but there's a particular sociopathic cruelty to ransomware that makes it a lot more vicious and offensive than just, say, stealing someone's credit card.
