Gauging how far they can push in (nuke in Kherson) before backlash.
I downvoted this flamebait before I read the article, but I was wrong.
> Moscow's concern that Ukraine could detonate a "dirty bomb" - a device laced with radioactive material.
> Previous Russian assertions that Ukraine might resort to using banned weapons such as biological arms have stirred concerns in the West that Moscow might be preparing to stage "false flag" attacks and blame them on Kyiv.
For context here is russian tool trying to convince IAEA inspectors (Nuclear Engineers) that Ukraine has been shelling its own Nuclear Power Station, station still supplying power to Ukraine, and the evidence on the ground, rocket remains, might confuse them. You see that rocket simply flipped 180 degrees before hitting the ground, thats why it merely looks like it came from the russian side.

Its the same argument russia tried to use after Kramatorsk railway station attack https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kramatorsk_railway_station_att... not to mention claiming they dont operate Tochka-U missiles.
NATO has been very clear about where the red line sits and the specific consequences that will result. There is no gauging to be done.
Only if by very clear you mean unspecified 'Catastrophic Consequences' with the subtext it wont be nuclear. putin might be willing to pay that price.
I for one am glad these communication channels are open. Sheesh.
Not really. It's just a another round of Russian propaganda trying to plant rumors to blame mythical Ukrainian supervillains for Russia's actions.
Propaganda or not, the article confirms that these calls do happen. At this moment in time, with tensions as high as they are, that's an important element to have in place.
