I recently bought a m.2 slot PCI-E card. Stuck it in an older machine that had some free PCI-E lanes and stuck a cheap (got it for free in a raffle) NVME SSD in it, and it's right as rain. Can't start boot off it, but setting up grub on a USB drive wasn't hard and that knows how read it.
