This is like one of those math problems where the person made multiple errors which canceled each other out. Yes, modern literature, of which American Literature is among, can only be described as moribund. But that has nothing to do with lacking a wild voice.
Publishing is somehow stuck in the 1950's. You could have the world's greatest novel; no one will find it to read it. Forget about getting a publisher because first you would have to get an agent, and forget about doing that. The web has given us everything we need to dispense with the old model but, for whatever reason, we're reluctant to do so.
