I don't think the price point was a major issue. It's the idea of paying a company when you produce the content that doesn't seem right to some some folks.
You're still being tracked and targeted. You're still the product, but now you're paying for some small privileges. No doubt many power users will do it, but I'm skeptical if it will move the needle on their revenue.
This criticism could be applied to Discord (Nitro), Youtube (Premium), and Snapchat (Plus). Heck, even Tinder to some extent. Twitter isn't the first to do something like this.
I'm not sure how viable a source of income it will be but I have no doubt there are users who are willing to pay for it.
