The terms of carriage are great. You acknowledge that there might be fuck all medical care. You acknowledge that if you miss the boat, tough shit. You acknowledge that all legal disputes will be settled in the Bahamas.

It's like renting a very expensive apartment, but with seasickness, and even less rights.

What better than NIMBYs self isolating and only annoying their own? The logic holds up I think.
Well, that was an advertorial considerably duller than what I had hoped for.

It's interesting to note that there are trans national sea nomads [1] that have increasingly had the same kinds of settler pressures experienced by other nomads and gypsies.

I love that one:

Thanks for the heavy oil you remarkable planet...and now fuck off.

I was expecting it to be artist residences on cargo ships like http://www.containerartistresidency01.org/about/

This is way more dystopian though. Cool.

You're locked in a shopping mall subject to Bahamas law with an HOA on steroids and on top of it all you may encounter pirates or sink, assuming the operator doesn't go bankrupt first.

Plus your house has to be docked or dry docked for long periods of time for maintenance and you have to share "your" vessel with hundreds of other people.

You could buy one hell of a yacht in your own jurisdiction for what they're asking.

Have you done the math? What are they asking, and what size yacht could you buy for the same amount? And how much is the upkeep for both?
Like anything, it depends.

You can get a 46' Morgan sailboat for $50,000 or a 44' Jeanneau for $475,000.

But I would say an average 45' sailboat is about $50K - $100K.

I'd go with a sailboat - the wind is free, but a motorboat can be very expensive. And of course, you can still have an inboard motor on your sailboat.

100% your own boat would be a vastly better deal, if that's what you want to do.

Plus, if you want to spend a lot of time on a boat, you can even find sailing partners to help you sail around for free. People who don't own a boat but want to sail the world. If you want. But the cool thing is, if you own the boat, is it is your decision, you can do whatever you want.

I appreciate the reply. When I hear yacht though, I'm thinking of something fancy in the millions of dollars. And while there are yachts like the Maltese Falcon (which I've seen in person), generally yachts do not have sails.
I looked into MS The World nearly a decade ago. Back then they would only consider you if you had a net worth of at least $10mm.

I was on their mailing list for a while, and every month they would have a new cabin for sale, complete with PDF brochure including a floor plan for the deck it was on.

You could rent a cabin for a short stay if you wanted. I forget how much the yearly dues were if you owned a residence.

I don't wanna know the carbon dioxide emissions per person year for those. Wait, I do.
If you have to ask, you can’t afford it
Starts at 825, goes up to 7M
do you have more info on the rates?
yes:

Starts at 825, goes up to 7M

That's the purchase price for a residence. There's a yearly fee to pay for the vessel's upkeep, it's been a long time, so I forgot what it was then, and it's probably gone up since then anyway.

Also, those purchase prices are old numbers, unless they really have stayed that low, which is possible since ships are depreciating assets.

If you have to ask, you cannot afford it.
i asked because i can :)
There are few things on this planet that I despise more than cruise ships. Be it the small Italian coastal towns, the beautiful fjords in Norway, tropical islands, wherever they go, it's like a swarm of locusts completely overwhelming those places. We once were in Norway at a Fjord and there was a cruise ship taking a tour. The Fjord was filled to the top with smoke from the f*%#ng ship's chimney.
I sincerely hope that all cruise ship business assets sink without anyone on board and no toxic waste stored in the most suitable part of the oceans to form a reef reminiscent of the gardens of babel. Horrible for the environment and horrible for those working on them.

That being said, what a magnificent piece of engineering, creating a vessel sustaining so many people in the middle of the part of the planet that comes only second to deserts for the worst place to be in for surviving. Such waste of brilliant engineering...

Im not sure about “The World” but most of these ships have 2-stroke engines. I see TW doesnt burn heavy fuel, but instead “cleaner” marine diesel. Like a private yacht.
care and motorbikes are much worse
This is not a very apt comparison however. Cars are not primarily used for leisure.
Yet by pure numbers they are def doing more miles than ships.
boy is this 100% different from https://www.reddit.com/r/priusdwellers/ which I happened to read last night.
That's just more expensive than average cruises
With a lot less people, more interesting shipmates (names that regular people would recognize), better destinations, and actually less expensive than renting comparable luxury suites on the newest cruise liners (assuming at least three years continuous occupancy).
How much are they?
I looked at this too.. But didn't find any info, meaning either "too expensive for you if you need to ask" or "we'd rather determine how gullible you are before quoting you a rate individually tailored to fuck you over as much as humanly possible"
