I have this idea for a Perry Bible Fellowship-esque comic that presents an epilogue to the Velveteen Rabbit in which after being transformed to a real rabbit he is found by a little girl who bring him home to become a family pet. The final panel showing her and her family dead by scarlet fever.
In my family, whenever someone gets over an illness, someone else mentions burning the velveteen rabbit. Likewise, if someone coughs, someone else mutters "Gollum."
Classic Christmas tale? Maybe I need to read it again, but I don't recall what made it a Christmas tale. Did the kid receive the toy at Christmas time?
The Velveteen Technology Becomes Real

"It's a thing that happens to a tech. When a userbase relies on a technology for a long, long time, and someone (or even several someones) creates a greenfield replacement that fixes all the ugly bits, but no one switches due to network effects — then that tech becomes Real."

I must have been away the day we learned of "The Velveteen Rabbit".
