Not to be insensitive, but it always interested me that idea of serial-killers/murders (or better put methodical killers or spree killers), abruptly stopped at the end of the 80's and early 90's. They were such a cultural phenomena during their time.

I'm sure the human nature that drove those things hasn't stopped... if anything it's probably gotten worse with the advent of the internet.

(Not to be insensitive either; sarcasm trigger warning) My theory is that it's been mostly replaced in media by the mass-murder/suicide. It's instant, stateless, does not warrant looking for clues and can be blamed on whatever suits the current agenda. Who has time for a killing spree lasting for weeks nowadays?
