Show HN: My $900.00 12 Tflops Gaming PC Build

Parts include Ryzen 5600x, rx 6650 xt and 16GB of 3600 c16 RAM.

Slightlky faster thans a PS5, Uses less watts, can be upgraded in future and runs quieter than PS5.

Those parts are actually super compatible with Linux and Valve's Proton layer for gaming. Give it a whirl if you get the chance, after all the PS5 is based on a UNIX-like OS as well... ;)

Except for the c state thing. I basically had to disable sleep on my Linux machine on 3950x, because when it would sleep, it would lock up and not come back. Funny thing is the windows VM kept responding fine. I could remote desktop into that, but I couldn't use the Ubuntu gui.

If there are some more recent fixes for this problem, don't hesitate to let me know.

Interesting, I'm using Intel machines right now so I'm not really able to reproduce that. The GPU should be fine though, and I should hope sleep states are a high priority for AMD's Linux support team.

Other than the cstate thing, it did run cyberpunk on Ubuntu &steam pretty well.

Indeed! I was going to dual boot, but Windows 10/11 now has WSL (Windows subsystem for linux). So I've been using Ubuntu, Debian, and other distros and also can launch (Wayland and x11) apps natively like Remmina and other Linux only apps: https://i.imgur.com/299XJvv.png

I had a similar setup when WSL1 was initially released, but I couldn't wait for GUI support. Switched to Linux only a couple weeks later, and haven't reinstalled Windows in years.

Obviously everyone's needs/setup is a bit different though, I was mostly quipping about the PS5 comparison. Looks like a good machine though, enjoy!

A PS5 is 10.3 Tflops and costs $400. If this is for gaming, it's not a great value.

The PS5 is an incredible value so anyone building a PC for gaming should be aiming for the high end.

There is a good argument that the standard PS5 costs $550. Sony has prioritized Disk production so digital base is hard to find still, Sony then has happily bundled it with GOW for a total of $550. Still cheaper but eh.

The PS5 has exclusives though. A better comparison is the Series X. Windows and Xbox basically have a 100% crossover of games due to well..obvious reasons. Series X is totally available for $499.

I don't think they're that hard to find anymore. I just opened the first link (Target) and the PS5 Digital is ready for pick up in 2 hours.

Might be a local thing. I tried earlier and can't find one within 100 miles, central PA. $550 bundles everywhere though

If memory serves, Sony increased their game pricing by $10 this generation, so maybe the PC ends up being the cheaper route in the long-run. Especially if you already have a big library of titles or, god-forbid want to emulate abandonware or retro games.

There are pros and cons to each machine, but it's not unfathomable that someone would want a PS5-grade desktop computer for the freedom it offers.

~ $400 to $500 now, but PS% is not upgradable and if the PS6 is anything like 5, it will be over $1000 for the first year+

If you went for the 12100f, a B660m, 3200 Ram, and a 500GB nvme, (Fractal Pop Air, etc) you can do this build, brand new, for ~750. 5600X is a little better for multicore but I prefer the 12th gen upgrade path.

With used parts and dropping to a 6600 XT (The 6650 is just a factory OC), I wouldn't be shocked to find out you can outperform the standard available PS5 bundle for similar money. ($550)

looks great. what is the use case for building this machine?

Gaming but I would note that the 5600X is a fine workstation CPU, the 6650XT is a good editing GPU, and with 32 or GB of ram, this can pretty much do anything at an acceptable level.

A gaming PC that like everyting else ended up being used mostly for work.

Gamning as the title says.
