When I read articles like this, I feel like the authors play fast and loose with interpretations. In this piece They read off statements of literal propaganda and then act like the statements were simply understood as true. Would we take as fact the particular wording of a crypto Ad to try and read into the American psyche of 2021?
What are the things you don't like? The claim that to enable statehood you had to get more white people there seems abundantly obvious based on historical precedent and today's political calculations about what territories would be supported for statehood.
I really enjoy this observation. It's the same sort of hermenutic that plagues armchair historians who don't look at primary sources and instead rely on the limited palette of the people who they either agree with or look up to.

Observing something through several layers of abstraction hardly provides the most accurate picture.
