That's much less significant as a factor, if one identifies a beneficial mean-regression stage within the periodic tendency of the metagame.

If you think everybody else got in early and the game is periodic in nature, it may be that your meta-game isn't systematic at a sufficiently calibrated level of detail...

But by definition, you will have many opportunities to get back in and win, depending on various subjective factors.

(And wouldn't this just be playing the game, anyway? Isn't playing the meta-game more like...profiting by writing articles about how to play the game? Or why one shouldn't? :-))
