Tv documentaries - especially the multi-part ones these days - are just very expensive to produce podcasts that are harder to find time to fit into your life.
This was a very wordy article that really ignores the true documentary makers that make informative documentaries on a shoestring budget because it's an important topic to them. The corporatization of everything is such a long-tail evil...

Too many mini documentaries on youtube too, that serve as yet another funnel for sponsorships and ads. "Why Facebook lost its way"...stuff like that.
