Gentoo, OpenSuSE, and Slackware have been around for some time. I'm not sure what there is to check out there -- they're fairly well known entities at this point.
Something something Gentoo complier broke something, etc.
SuSE is a known quantity because of it's SAP ties and YaST.
Never heard of the other two, though, and the article didn't give me a strong idea of the value adds outside of "it doesn't use this library".
