In my experience people primarily use the term "MacGuffin" in reference to things they do not understand but see the significance of, they reduce theme to plot, they make the idea of a MacGuffin itself a MacGuffin. This irony seems lost on them but I can not help but hope that someday they will find humor in it; my optimism knows no bounds.
