As a general rule, I say “eschew the new” and go for the classics.

Here are some excellent game critics:

Some random recommendations off the top of my head:

• Monument Valley : a short puzzle game about optical illusions

• Breath of the Wild : open-world Zelda with fun physics

• Untitled Goose Game : wreak havoc on a small town as a goose

• Hollow Knight : difficult but reward metroidvania game with lots of secrets

• FTL : spaceship management

• Hyper Light Drift : incredibly beautiful Zelda-like game

• Portal : puzzle game with portals

• Undertale : moral bullet-hell with humor

I’ve also heard great things about Noita, Rain World, Disco Elysium, Bioshock, Elden Ring, ChronoTrigger, Mother 3, Braid, and Dwarf Fortress

Wow this is pretty nice - are most of these desktop, console or mobile? I am struggling to especially find a good mobile game that has no ads (which destroys the gaming experience)

Last I tried was Royal Match which is actually not bad.

Mobile games (iOS, Android) are incentivized to rely on addictive/predatory business models.

There are short artsy games out there, but I generally would recommend staying away from most mobile games.

My only recommendations for mobile are: Monument Valley, Lifeline, Limbo, and Reigns

If you're not in the market for a Nintendo Switch, you might consider getting a portable emulator:
