If I may be a bit irreverent, the analogy that comes to mind right away is of wannabe-popular jocks in high-school strutting around, showing their pumped-up muscles, in an effort to intimidate others. The other jocks are looking intently, trying to handicap their own odds of winning in a mano-a-mano fight.
