In my experience the general advice is : “Always carry with you a copy printed of your passport while leaving the original locked at the hotel”.

This is useless in any real situation. Gives you a false sense of security but no one will take a copy seriously.
agreed, looks like its down to "just have your passport on you at all times as a primary form of ID"
