Of course, the article does not actually include any of these astonishing photographs, and I can't find them online either. But this (2017) NYT story has some.

The novel Noble House by James Clavell and subsequent TV miniseries starring Pierce Brosnan involve these boats quite a bit. The miniseries was filmed on location in Hong Kong and a decent portion of it takes place on the boats/in the harbor. The book is better than the show, but it's still worth watching.

Bit misleading title because this population still exist although it is much smaller. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanka_people (not the only group). I'm from Hong Kong and frequently sail nearby.
People in the UK live in canal boats all over the country, and it's increasing too, presumably due to the "housing crisis" that's too profitable to do anything about.
