One of the commercials you may see on daytime TV or shady web ads, is advertising that the US Federal Government is giving away millions of dollars in grants. Now this much is true; there are a lot of federal grants out there for people who can qualify and write an application and compete for them. Even just going to college, of course, you've got your FAFSA and Pell Grant.

I guess what these commercials promise is a sort of database index or matchmaking service that will find you all the grants you could possibly qualify for, and perhaps help you apply for them in some way. It's probably nothing you couldn't do on your own, if you have the time and research skills.

Of course the NSF does not give money out of thin air when you haven't asked for it. Most entities do not do this. So indeed, there is cause for skepticism.
