Fascinating article. If this catches your attention, do check out The Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated: The Empire That Was Russia[^1] exhibit at the Library of Congress website. Not only is it a technological marvel itself, but you'll get to see some of the earliest known color photography, which itself is on par with Hockney's _Secret Knowledge_ [^2] (a classic for hackers and painters alike).
