Why not send it by plane ?
Because of the square-cube law. The volume of an object goes up like the cube of the dimension while the surface area like the square. So a large block of ice melts more slowly than a small block of ice. You don't need to ship it by plane because time is not that crucial. Before the invention of electricity people used to store ice from winter to summer in ice houses [1].
