Great story. I'd be sorry to convict this guy if I'm on a jury and maybe wouldn't. The father would probably be quite happy to die in prison if the result is a live son. Maybe there was a better way via calm words, or handcuffing himself to the son, or something else. But with his son's life on the line it's hard for me to blame him for choosing a more certain route without knowing more.

Drunk and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon doesn't sound like a good way to protect one's son in any situation.
Nothing prevents parents from acting like adults, and doing so might even set a good example for other children.
