So far most of the justification for mass layoffs recently has been that this is a correction from over-hiring during the pandemic. Is this also the case for newspapers?

I suspect newspapers are on a downward trajectory and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
I think most people are consuming the articles through some middle service like Facebook, and many people don’t bother to read more than a few lines.
So really you end up with very few ads to display to customers.
