Google moon (which still exists but is obviously not maintained with available data) used to show cheese when you zoomed in too far.
Yeah, it's a real pity they got rid of that :(
99.9% of all folklore is long running jokes, I've never been sure if the humour is in seeing how many people are gullible enough to believe that people back then believed the story, or if the story itself is the joke.

I grew up hearing local tales of Wade and Wayland, and I don't think anyone seriously expected me to believe them after I was about 3 or so.
